Frequently Asked Questions

Getting Started

How do I get started?

The first step is to book a free phone consultation. This allows us to learn more about your dog and understand what you’d like to achieve through training. We’ll discuss your goals, explain our training approach, and answer any questions you may have.

Consultations typically take about 30 - 45 minutes and are the perfect way to determine the best path forward for you and your dog.

Do you offer a free consultation?

Yes. Every training journey begins with a free consultation where we'll discuss your dog's needs, goals, and the best training program for your situation.

How much does training cost?

Training programs vary based on your goals and your dog's needs. Contact me for a free consultation, and I'll recommend the best training plan for you and your dog.

Where does training take place?

Training sessions are conducted in your home and in real-world environments where your dog spends time. This allows training to be practical, personalized, and effective.

What areas do you serve?

Barrio Dog Training serves Tucson, Oro Valley, Marana, Catalina Foothills, Vail, Sahuarita, SaddleBrooke, and surrounding communities.

Which training program is right for my dog?

Every dog is different. During your free consultation, we'll discuss your dog's age, temperament, current challenges, and your goals to recommend the best program.

Can my family participate in training?

Absolutely! Consistency is important, so I encourage all household members to participate. This helps your dog learn expectations more quickly and creates better long-term results.

Training Programs

How long does training take?

Training timelines vary depending on your dog’s age, breed, temperament, and the goals you have in mind. Basic obedience can typically take a few weeks, while more advanced training or behavior modification may take several months.

Consistency, practice, and completing homework between sessions are key to long-term success.

How many sessions does my dog need?

Every dog is different. Most clients see significant improvement within 4–8 sessions.

Do you come to my home?

Yes. Most sessions are conducted in your home or at agreed-upon public locations.

Do you offer group classes?

No. All training is personalized and conducted one-on-one.

Puppies

What age is best to start training?

The earlier, the better! puppies experience an important socialization period during their first few months of life, during which they are especially open to learning and new experiences. Starting training during this time helps set the foundation for a well-behaved, confident dog.

That said, it’s never too late to start—dogs of any age can benefit from training!

Must my puppy be fully vaccinated before starting?

Puppies should have at least two rounds of core vaccinations before any training that will require leaving your residence. This provides a basic level of protection while allowing them to start learning during their critical socialization period.

For certain classes, like group exposure sessions or public outings, full vaccination may be required.

Always consult with your veterinarian to ensure your puppy is ready for training based on their age and vaccination schedule.

What ages do you work with?

We work with puppies, adolescents, and adult dogs.

Behavior & Training Methods

What training methods do you use?

I use positive reinforcement methods that focus on rewarding desired behaviors, building trust, and strengthening the relationship between you and your dog.

Do you use positive reinforcement?

Yes. Training focuses on positive reinforcement, clear communication, and practical real-world results.

My dog listens at home but not outside. Can training help?

Absolutely. This is one of the most common challenges owners face. Our Real Life Obedience program focuses on helping dogs respond reliably around distractions in real-world environments.

What kinds of behavioral issues can training help?

Professional dog training can help address a wide range of behavioral challenges, including: fear of loud noises or unfamiliar situations, destructive chewing or digging, excessive barking or whining, jumping, leash pulling, and other impulse control issues. With consistent training and the right strategies, many of these behaviors can be significantly improved—or resolved entirely.

What kinds of issues do you not work with?

We do not handle cases involving aggression, whether dog-to-dog, dog-to-person, or severe anxiety. These complex behaviors require specialized expertise and will be referred to a qualified behaviorist who is trained to address such challenges.

Dog-Specific Questions

What breeds do you train?

We train all breeds and all sizes—from tiny Yorkies to towering Irish Wolfhounds. No matter the breed, size, or background, we tailor our training to fit each dog’s individual needs and personality.

Big or small, we train them all!

Why do I have to provide vaccination records?

Vaccination records are required for all dogs enrolled with Barrio Dog Training. They help protect your dog—and others—by preventing the spread of serious and potentially deadly diseases like Distemper, Parvo, and Rabies.

Ensuring all dogs are properly vaccinated keeps our training environment safe, healthy, and responsible for everyone involved.

Do I need treats for training?

Yes. Food rewards are one of the most effective ways to teach new behaviors. We'll discuss appropriate treats and how to gradually reduce reliance on them as your dog becomes more reliable.
